Duo2 Is it worth upgrading to Solo 4K

stainless

Hi,

I have a vu+ duo 2 which is working fine, no issues.

However, I am one of those who always want to upgrade to the latest model if I can. So, I simply need some excuses to make myself buy the Solo 4K.

I know lots of other chaps will also be thinking the same so I wanted to put it out there for everyone.

The big question, "is it worth upgrading to Solo 4K from Duo2?"

To make it easier, I have following specific questions:
- Other than 4K, What are the main differences between Solo 4K and Duo2 (Hardware-wise)?
- Does Solo 4K support upscaling?
- Are there any English channels being broadcasted over UK atm? if yes, which ones?
- Why do we have two categories Duo and Solo, in the first place?

All answers will be highly appreciated.

1) Faster CPU, bigger flash, FBC Tuners (with correct lnb, this means the twin sat tuners, effectivly become 8 sat tuners, meaning you can watch / record, from 8 different transponders at the same time, regardless of the frequency or polarity
2) Yes
3) Only UHD demo channels being broadcast atm afaik (demo vids) and the fashion channel on 19.2e
4) It's just a name. The original vu+ box was a single tuner and named Solo, there 2nd box was twin tuner and was named Duo, and it's just carried on from that.

Comparing with my Duo2, it looks like I would get the following upgrades for about $600.00 U.S.

* Ability to watch two UHD test channels
* Upgrade to ARM chipset
* Upgrade to USB 3.0
* Upgrade HDMI (At some point in the future)
* Upgrade to FBC DVB-S2 tuners

I do not see there being much difference between a CPU 1300 MHz speed and a 1500 MHz speed.

It's a very good and pertinent question.

The S4K specs are there to be seen but the true upgrade or comparative to the Duo2 would really be in the form of a 'Duo 4K' whenever that transpires.

In the meantime the S4K introduces Full Band Capture Tuners and UHD. To take advantage of FBC you will also need a Unicable LNB to be fitted. This combo will then allow you the possibility to simultaneously watch and record 8 transponders. Bear in mind that you will likely be restricted to do that viewing only on one Satellite at a time, dependent on your dish set up. UHD transmissions are still early days. It won't do 4:2:2 feeds either.

The Duo2 for example allows more plugin tuners and with that a more flexible multi array of dish set ups including multi-motorised. UHD hasn't really taken off yet and a lack of content means it's still very much 1st gen 1st adopter domain.

If you were a Solo2 owner looking for an upgrade or replacement then the S4K would be the current natural successor.

If you are a Duo2 owner then the natural upgrade will come in the form of a 'Duo 4k'

Ultimately deep pockets and the desire for early adoption may be 'more the reason' to sway you towards the S4K in the meantime.

How does it upscale? I tried to change to 4k at A/V settings/Autoresoltion to 4K but it shows black screen. I got HDMI 2.0 and use ARC Yamaha Dolby that supports 4K pass through. No idea. Pls help.

I have made a mistake.

I have got vu+ duo 2 with DVB C tuner to watch sat and cable togather. I was impressed by quality of VU+ Duo 2 that I ordered Solo 4K without reading this forum.

I didnt know that solo 4k does NOT support DVB tuner. Now Solo 4k is due to arrive in few days.

I want to watch cable through DVB C/T tuner and satellite channels.

What is your recommendation?

The solo4k has a pluggable tuner slot in it.

So you can fit a dvb-c/t tuner to it (infact you can have twin dvb-c /t tuners using the TT3L10 tuner).

Can you explain me what is "TT3L10 tuner"? I have tried to google it but I could not find any useful information. i have got DVB C/T2 hybrid tuner installed in my duo2 box. Is solo 4k really upgrade? as I am due to buy a 4k tv very soon.

What box I should really keep? I can get list of my box on ebay.....

You can use the tuner from your duo2 in the solo4k to save you buying a new 1.

The tt3l10 tuner is just a twin dvb-c /t hybrid tuner.

As for which box you should have, that is something only you can decide.

I am very happy with my Solo4K, but that is not to say I do not love my Duo2 also :)

The twin tuner, will do 2x dvb-c transponders, or 2x dvb-t/t2 transponders at the same time.

It has only 1 connection, as you can not feed it with cable and terrestrial at the same time (the frequencies clash and give signal problems if you try).

How I can feed two dvb- c inputs? as there is one input and one is output connection with tuner?

Obviously I have got DVB - S tuner for satellite channels.

As I am planning to buy 4K tv, is this solo box going to be a real future proof or Duo 2 has better specs as 1080p receiver?

I am asking for a reason, because I believe you guys are tech guru and you can give me your expert advice, otherwise I just go for name and look. Obviously Solo 4K has better attraction due to 4K title and Duo 2 has better look due to dual display screen. Otherwise I am looking for your words for a final advice.

Please....

It only needs 1 input and it splits the feed internally (dvb-c and dvb-t do not work the same way as dvb-s).
