Is absolutely not easy to say which one is better to use because it is too subjective.
I can tell you that, after a couple of years with BH, I now prefer OBH. But it’s my opinion and too long to explain pros and cons

I don't speak Italian, but Google helped me read your post.

In North America, virtually all of the Free to Air satellites use linear polarization. Some of the DBS satellites are circularly polarized. Some of these different satellites occupy the same orbital position. Frequency differences and polarization (and polarity) differences allow selecting one transponder from the others.

My only interest is in the Free- to Air, Linearly polarized satellites, particularly SES3 C and Ku bands at 103W. I also occasionally watch programming on other C band satellites, too.

Ho visto che ci sono frequenze in V e H a me sconosciute / da sempre l'america aveva solo Circolare e mi scuso.
Dovrai usare un disco molto ampio per ricevere questi segnali / interessante, ma l'america riesce con i sistemi da me conosciuti quando fanno il traking poi
non hanno problemi visto la copertura per il vostro mercato.

Yes, I use dishes from 1.8 to 3meters in diameter for the C-band reception. I'm lucky my wife likes to watch the same programming I do, so she accepts having three large dishes in our back yard! ;-)

I used to try to receive programming on an Atlantic satellite NSS-806 when I lived in the Chicago, Illinois area. It was circularly polarized. Since moving to California, these Atlantic satellites are below my eastern horizon, so all I get are linear polarized signals.

Sì, uso piatti da 1,8 a 3 metri di diametro per la ricezione della banda C. Sono fortunato che a mia moglie piaccia guardare la stessa programmazione che faccio, quindi accetta di avere tre piatti grandi nel nostro cortile! ;-)

Ho provato a ricevere la programmazione su un satellite Atlantic NSS-806 quando vivevo a Chicago, nell'Illinois. Era polarizzato circolarmente. Dal loro trasferimento in California, questi satelliti atlantici sono sotto il mio orizzonte orientale, quindi tutto quello che ottengo sono segnali polarizzati lineari.

Hi, Paolo!
This satellite is far below my eastern horizon. Not only the curvature of the Earth gets in the way, but the mountains in which I live, and the tall trees surrounding my location conspire to prevent me from seeing any satellites below about 80W.
This satellite doesn't appear in the Lyngsat list. In fact, nothing appears at 29.5W. (there's 27.5W and 30W and nothing in between.
Other than the pay-tv satellites (in which I have little interest, since they stuff 10Kg of.... stuff... in a 2Kg bag, adversely affecting the video quality), I have no circularly polarized signals to worry about, which is good, since my main dish has an Orthomode (separate H and V LNBs for both C and Ku bands) and it would be difficult to insert and remove the dielectric block to switch from linear to circular and back.
Someone closer to the East coast of North America would be better able to contribute meaningfully to this particular conversation. (I'm located about 25Km from the West Coast of central california, about as far West as I can go without getting very wet! ;-) )

Questo satellite è molto al di sotto del mio orizzonte orientale. Non solo la curvatura della Terra si mette in mezzo, ma le montagne in cui vivo, e gli alti alberi che circondano la mia posizione cospirano per impedirmi di vedere qualsiasi satellite al di sotto di circa 80W.

Questo satellite non viene visualizzato nell'elenco Lyngsat. Infatti, nulla appare a 29.5W. (Ci sono 27,5 W e 30 W e niente in mezzo.

A parte i satelliti pay-tv (in cui ho poco interesse, dato che contengono 10Kg di ... roba ... in un sacchetto da 2Kg, influenzando negativamente la qualità del video), non ho segnali circolari polarizzati di cui preoccuparmi, che è buono, dal momento che il mio piatto principale ha un Orthomode (separato LNB H e V per entrambe le bande C e Ku) e sarebbe difficile inserire e rimuovere il blocco dielettrico per passare da lineare a circolare e viceversa.

Qualcuno più vicino alla costa orientale del Nord America sarebbe meglio in grado di contribuire significativamente a questa particolare conversazione. (Mi trovo a circa 25 km dalla costa occidentale della California centrale, circa il più a ovest possibile senza bagnarmi! ;-))

Hi, everyone!

Last weekend, I made some time to experiment with several options to see which ones solved my biggest problems (I couldn't get Pacific DST to work, and the timer recordings were overwriting the previous recording).

First, I tried to install the latest Open Black Hole. This was unsuccessful (initially) because the receiver locked up on boot. On to plan B:

I then installed the latest factory software. This loaded ok, but while the time zone issue was solved, it wouldn't let me record. I could play back recordings that were already on the haard disk, but no matter what I tried, I couldn't record. On to plan C:

I installed the latest version of Open VIX. This actually seems to be working for me. The time zone isn't a problem, and it appears to be recording new files without overwriting the old ones. I found it had a few alternate "skins" one of which appealed to my eye, so I'm using that right now. It even facilitates saving not only my settings and " boquets" but even itself. I hope to try to install this full copy on my other "virgin" receiver (which also has the inablilty to record at all, while being able to play back recordings from the hard drive.

I still haven't solved the problem with the audio on one channel (which is what precipitated my destroying an otherwise working installation of BH in the first place!), but I hope to come up with a fix, eventually!

Having two identical receivers allows me the luxury of experimenting with new software on one without interfering with my use of the other one, so I'll be watching for new BH and OBH versions in the future.

But you haven't tried OBH, yet. You gave up at the first attempt! Also, this forum gives support only to BH and OBH. So don't discuss about openvix or else.
I suggest you to try again with OBH 4.1.
You have also another option to make experiments: installing images by openmultiboot so that you have an image running from flash and the others from OMB.
BH is having some issues about recordings (but this one should have be fixed now by the 305-K update, as far as I know) although there seems to be the problem with repeated recording of a series (I say so based upon the posts I read here because I no longer use BH as my main image: it's installed in OMB just for some tries).
OBH has never had recording issues of any kind, instead.

Hi, Alex!

I left out one step of the process i went through in my trials last weekend. I retried loading a new download of OBH, which was successful up to the point of scanning 103W . When I did this, nothing showed up. I'd set up my tuners the same way as I'd done for all the other attempts. I looked at my settings and compared them to my captured settings pages, and found no difference. It was after this attempt that I tried OpenVIX.

(I'm running a motorized C/Ku band 3 meter dish on one tuner, and a stationary 1m Ku dish set on 103W on the other tuner.)

As I said at the end of my last post, I have a second Vu+ Solo 4K unit, and will try new software revisions on it, while keeping a working installation on the other unit.

Does OBH have a simple way of capturing all of my settings so that I don't have to go through the laborious process of setting up each satellite on each tuner? That would be really handy. Ideally, one should be able to save a working setup to a USB key that could be used to directly set up another unit as a clone of the first. That would be GREAT!!!

You may use telnet to transfer your channel file to almost any other enigma2 receiver. Antenna settings can also be transferred to other enigma2 receivers using different images. There is a lot you can do with these receivers if take the time to learn how. None of it is hard to do.

Can you tell me where the file that contains the channel file is? I've already been using the Satellites.xml file to bring in the North American satellites, but I still have to manually set up the tuners, and individually setup and scan the individual satellites .

Channel files are located at: etc/enigma2. The channel files are named lamedb and lamedb5. All of the receiver settings are located in the same folder as the channel files. Your settings are in a file called settings. There are several different ways of transferring your settings to different receivers or different images.

Is not recommendable to copy the whole file "settings" because it contains EVERY settings related to EVERY plugins. So, if the other receiver has different plugins you could get into some errors.
The lines of "settings" devoted to the tuners' configuration are the ones beginning with "NIMS".
 
Top
