Vu+Duo2 strange tuner issue

Hi folks, I'm hoping someone can help me as I'm tearing out what little hair I have left on my head! I have a Vu+Duo2 with dual LNB for 28.2E only. The Dual A/B S2 tuner loses it's signal completely on Ch.B. However, if I go to the tuner menu (which is set at "Manual" (28.2E) and change it to "Predefined" (still no signal) then BACK to "Manual", the signal suddenly reappears and is ok again. I can then record on one channel and watch another, but then it will fail again intermittantly. I have swapped over the inputs from the LNB's into the back of the tuner card but it always seems to be Tuner B that fails. I've also tried various images including BH, OpenVix and currently OpenVTi... same problem! I suspect a tuner issue but I'd appreciate your recommendations before I shell out for another! Thanks for any help you can offer...

Sorry for my english.
Can you try another LNB connect to that Tuner B?
Maybe problem is in LNB.

Your Duo 2 has slots for two DVB-S2 tuners, they just slot in like a graphics card, on a PC, so you could try moving it to the other slot, tro test it, but first I would check the Tuner configuration.
Can you please go into the tuners, select Tuner B, and set it up as Simple, Mode = Single, and select Astra 2, 28.2e, then set Tuner A as Equal to Tuner B.
Please report back with how this works.

Hi Mick12334,
I had the same problem with my Duo2. On tuner A, and on hotbird, the signal was fluctuating very badly on action, xxl channels.
As you said, I changed it to Tuner b and it's fine!!
Is there any problem with the Tuner?

It depends if Tuner A is connected to a motor, which sometimes causes a drop in signal quality, not much, but enough, when on a weakish transponder. It could also be the cable is damaged, suffering from water ingress, loose connections, faulty LNB, or other.

Problem with a tuner on my Vu+ Duo 2.

Perhaps some one can help with my problem or make useful suggestions.
I have a Vu+ Duo 2, using Blackhole image 2.1.6.1, with in slot 1 a dual tuner A & B and slot 2 a terrestrial tuner.
Whatever I try, tuner B does not always work. I thought it was a defect dual tuner so I recently bought a new one which gives the same results.

It seems that when both tuner A and tuner B are connected to a (separate) coax feed, tuner B does not work. I have changed slots and coax feeds with no difference.
The terrestrial tuner C always works.
I have done lots of test, some of the results are shown here:

I have two separated coax feeds which I have tested to be equal in all respects. Both have output of 19.2º E and 13.0º E. I call them coax1 and coax2 for convenience.

Tests: Restart of box at each change
A)
coax1 connected to tuner A (config. Simple/19.2º & 13.0º)
coax2 connected to tuner B (config. Simple/19.2º & 13.0º)
Using Satfinder, Tuner A / predefined transponder/99%
Tuner B / predefined transponder/99% no difference between tuner A & B.
B)
Tuner A config as simple/19.2E & 13.0E
Tuner B config as Equal to A
coax1 to Tuner A and Tuner B not connected
– All channels available.
Coax1 to tuner B and Tuner A not connected
NO channels available Why?
C)
Tuner A config as simple/19.2E & 13.0E
Tuner B config as simple/19.2E & 13.0E
coax1 to Tuner A and Tuner B not connected
– All channels available.
Coax1 to tuner B and Tuner A not connected
NO channels available Why? No difference between separate configurations and
“Equal to” configuration.
D)
Tuner A config as Equal to B
Tuner B config as simple/19.2E & 13.0E
Coax1 to tuner B and Tuner A not connected
NO channels available Why?
coax1 to Tuner A and Tuner B not connected
– All channels available. Here tuner B is the “main” tuner but NO channels on tuner B!
E)
Tuner A not configured
Tuner B config as simple/19.2E & 13.0E
Coax1 to tuner B
All channels available. Proves that tuner B is working.
F)
Tuner A loopthrough to B
Tuner B config as simple/19.2E & 13.0E
coax1 to Tuner B and Tuner A not connected
All channels available. Proves that tuner B is working.
Coax1 to tuner A and Tuner B not connected
NO channels available Why?

All comments will be appreciated.

The first answer, to option B, might be simple, as you've got B set to Equal to Tuner A, but you haven't got a cable connected to Tuner A.
There isn't a loop through on a dual satellite tuner card, can you please explain your setup, in more detail.
You mention 2 separate cables, from 19E, and 13E, are these separate LNB's, and a Diseqc switch, or are you using a 6 degree momoblock?

Try setting it up the other way round, Tuner B simple, Diseqc A/B, 19.2E and 13E, then set Tuner A to Equal to Tuner B.
You can also go into the Menu, Setup, System, Customize, set the first option to Expert then change your preferred Tuner from Auto to B.

Thanks for your reply.

In more detail, I have 2 separate satellite dishes, dish 1 with 19.2E and 13.0E and dish 2 with 23.5E and 28.2E. I use all twin LNB´s and Diseqc switches and two separate coax feeds to my Vu+ Duo 2.

If I remember correctly, I did not have these problems on my Vu+ Duo which I replaced last year. I do not remember if I had these problems on my Duo2 with earlier Blackhole images.

The tests I wrote about previously only mentioned 19.2 and 13.0 as an example and to make things less complex. I can repeat them for my full configuration with the same results.

I tried your suggestion “Try setting it up the other way round, Tuner B simple, Diseqc A/B, 19.2E and 13E, then set Tuner A to Equal to Tuner B” but that made no difference.

Your suggestion to make tuner B the preferred tuner made no difference, unfortunately. I tested as follows:
Configuration: Both tuners separately set to Simple; A/B/C/D; 19.2, 13.0, 23.5, 28.2 ; yes, no
(all channels visible in the channel list)
Record RAI Sport 1 / hotbird 13.0/ FTA / recording on tuner B (as shown on info bar)
Record Eurosport Germany / Astra 19.2/ FTA /recording on tuner B (as shown on info bar)

or,

Record Eurosport Germany / Astra 19.2/ FTA /recording on tuner B (as shown on info bar)
Record BBC 1 / Astra 28.2/ FTA / recording on tuner B (as shown on info bar)

Except for same transponder, all other channels give the message “No free tuner” (and channels are greyed-out showing that they are not accessible). Tuner A is not used at all.

All channels in the channel list are normally accessible (when only recording one other)

It seems that both my tuners are working but only one tuner at a time can be active.

But if that is so, what I do not understand is that channels on two totally different transponders can be recording at the same time via one tuner.

Could it have anything to do with software or firmware?

More likely to do with your tuner configuration.
Try setting Tuner A to Advanced, Diseqc 1.0, and set up your Diseqc settings, at this point set Tuner B to Not Configured, then see if all 4 satellites, using both polarities, work correctly.
Next set Tuner A to Not Configured, and set Tuner B up to Advanced, Diseqc 1.0, and see if all 4 satellites are viewable.

If they are, go back to Tuner A and set it as Equal to Tuner B, then see if you cna record, and view, other channels.

I am not familiar with advanced tuner settings, however, I tried some things as follows:

Tuner choice: Auto Tuner B not configured
Tuner A advanced / 19.2/ LNB1/ Diseqc mode = 1,0 / rest not changed
Result: only 19.2 channels available

Changed to LNB2 ==> same results

Tried 13.0/LNB1 and LNB2 /Diseqc mode = 1,0 / rest not changed and
28.2/ LNB1 and LNB4 /Diseqc mode = 1,0 / rest not changed
==> same resulults, only 19.2 channels available.

I must be doing something wrong as all combinations give me the same result.

Something else, I changed back to Tuner choice: auto and both tuners set to 19.2;13.0;23.5;28.2
and all channels now use tuner B to play. (Previously the choice was tuner A)

Thanks for the time you are putting into this problem, much appreciated.

You need to still set the Diseqc settings, so in Advanced mode, you select the satellite, e.g. Astra 1, LNB 1, Diseqc 1.0, then I think it's the committed Diseqc commands, input 1, or could be other, then set up 23.5E, LNB 1, Diseqc 1.0, and select the correct Diseqc Committed command, etc..

Have you still got your Tuner preference set to Tuner B, and not Auto?
Are both Diseqc switches the same, 4 in 1 out?

After some research on internet about tuner settings, I configured both tuners identically as follows:
Advanced
Sat. 19.2/ LNB1 / Diseqc made 1.0 / Committed Diseqc command AA
Sat. 13.0/ LNB2 / Diseqc made 1.0 / Committed Diseqc command AB
Sat. 23.5/ LNB3 / Diseqc made 1.0 / Committed Diseqc command BA
Sat. 28.2/ LNB4 / Diseqc made 1.0 / Committed Diseqc command BB

Tuner preference set to Auto
I can view all channels.
I can record only 2 channels. After that I get the message “no free tuner” on any other channel.

Initially I set tuner B to not configured and configured tuner A to the 4 advanced mode configs as above. All channels were available. I then configured tuner B to the 4 advanced mode configs as above. Again all channels are available but recording and or viewing more than 2 at once is not possible.

This is identical to when the tuners are both configured to simple; Port A 19.2, Port B 13.0, Port C 23.5, Port D 28.2

Yes, both Diseqc switches the same, 4 in 1 out.

Any other suggestions? Nowhere can I find any reference to my problem. Tuners seem always to work without problems and I have not found much on dual tuners on one receiver.

You can only record 2 channels, on different transponders, with only 2 tuners, but you can record 2 channels, on the same transponder, and still be able to view/record others.
Try recording ITV 2, and ITV 4, on 28.2E, 10758 V 22000, then try viewing other channels, on 28.2E, or other satellites.

With all ports configured to advance as above and Tuner preference set to B , all satellites are available on either Tuner A or tuner B which was not the case before (see message #6 C) above). Recording 23.5 was on B and then an additional recording on 13.0 went to A as it should be.
Channel switching seems a little slower than before. I have set Fast Diseqc to yes but that has not made any difference. For now I will live with it.
Thanks again for your help.
