What image do you have loaded, and which skin?
Have you tried using LCD4Linux?
I'm not sure what display options the VU+ Ultimo has, but check the LCD4Linux threads, and there are videos, on the internet, if you search.

I’m using the latest open black hole image

The latest Black Hole 3.0.6, and Open Black Hole 4.2, aren't available for the older VU+ Ultimo, or a few other receivers, due to the updates not being suitable for the older receivers.
Have you tried the LCD4Linux plugin?
You can find videos on how to set it up.
