can anyone tell me if you update software management does it just update software or do you have to reload a image, ie do you loose all your channels etc. Hope someone can help or advise.

If you do an online Update on your Box then you wont lose your channels etc but I would always Do a backup anyway mate

Software update has nothing to do with the channel list and the like.
Usually we write information related to the update.
When major changes usually we have a completely new image.
In this case, is good to have a backup.
