Solo2 Transcoding still poor quality

Hi folks,

I have to say I am still very disappointed with the transcoding quality of the Solo2. This is one of the main reasons why I opted for the Solo2 but even the quality on my mobile phone is nowhere near good enough. Does anyone know if there will be an option available in future updates to manually select encoding bitrate? My internet connection has a 10Mbps upload speed and I understand current bitrate is fixed at around 400kbps. Thanks.

Try picture quality with WLAN connection and use last Vu+ Player on your mobile device.

What carrier are you using then outside your home ??
Why not use streaming option instead then ??
I'm very happy with the transcoding, to my Ithings.

One other thing
Earlier I was forced to have a PC up and running as a VLC server for transcoding/restreaming purpose.
No need for that any more, ....
so perhaps that should be your choice, then you have everything on your hands, between 0,4 and 10Mbps, later enough for HD

I agree with you.
Very low resolution, low bitrate and no way to customize it.
I think the Solo2 CPU has enough power to do it better.

This has nothing to do with my carrier. Even on my 5" mobile phone and selecting an HD channel it is unwatchable when transcoding. This surely isn't a limitation of the chipset as I would have thought more transcoding power would be needed for a lower bandwidth output. It would be nice to have the option of bitrates just like in VLC.

This kind of defeats the purpose for me. I mentioned in my first post that the transcoding capability was one of the main reason why I purchased the Solo2. I love everything else about this box. It simply flies. It's just the transcoding is awful. I must try find a way to contact Vu+ and see what they have to say about it.

OK, not agree.
I don't have a clue what you mean with carrier in your answer,
gprs as linked, _big_ differens between that, edge, 3G, 4G......
or your telecom company that send you invoices or handle your prepaid cellphone simcard.

and why transcode HD, try SD thats kinda transcoded HD already

@cyborgpunte

It's not a problem related to his, or should I write OUR carrier, cause the transcoded POOR quality is visible also playing the stream on a PC connected by wire on a 1Gbps network using OpenWebif. No differences between SD or HD channels, low resolution/bitrate.

OK, sorry I think understand now.
But why trancoding then ?? on 1Gbps, I myself stream on LAN or high bandwith
Isn't trancoding used to shrink streams
in my case to fit in slow hotspots and mobilenetworks, perfect.
But I shouldn't complain if there would be some switches in next version,
perhaps asis and 1mbps.

Once again, the point we are trying to make is that no matter how fast your internet connection is the transcoding quality is still poor, therefore the carrier does not come into the equation and is completely unrelated.

Ideally, I would like to be able to stream on my tablet in HD using high quality transcoding. The standard bitrate is far too high but getting an option to transcode an HD channel at, say 5Mbps would result in a noticeable improvement over SD. It is one of perks of the Solo2 box so being given the option to do this would be nice.

There should not be a hardware limitation as transcoding to 5Mbps from 30+ Mbps HD stream is surely less stressful than converting it to 400Kbps or 800Kbps.

OK got it.
My tablets supports both HD and 802.11n.

I completely agree with mrkrabs. It would be very useful to have a customizable transcoding, in order to be able of configuring it on the basis of the user needs. It's a potential great feature that currently is not really well exploited.

I'm another one that agrees. It seems a low bitrate (~500kbps) has to be used by default.
A variable choice of bitrate would be a lot better - or at least a choice of low, medium or high quality depending upon the speed of connection.

as i pointed out in the Duo2 thread, to my understanding ( and this comes from several of Vu's own inhouse beta team not any image teams ), transcoding on the solo2 is largely software based and therefore very very unlikely to improve, where as the duo2 has added hardware for this task.

I'm not sure about this, Duo² has the new Broadcom BCM 7425 CPU that can do better than Solo²'s 7356, but both CPU does Transcode by hardware.
To check this, start a telnet connection to your box, type "top" to see a list of running tasks. Then start transocding.
No changes here, system load average change from 0.14% to 0.15% during transcode/stream, so, I think, it's totally done by hardware.
I don't expect nothing more from Duo²...

personally i dont use transcoding at all, i'm just telling what i have been told by no fewer than 4 out of the 6 in house Vu+ beta tester team.

I don't know either, but guessing could it be this :
(havn't tried transcoding HD on my solo2 just SD over cellphone network)

(mybolding) from broadcom homepage
-"Broadcom's BCM7425 is the world's first
home video media server (VMS) SoC solution to integrate a real-time HD transcoder"

I would like to be able to decrease the bitrate of the solo2 transcoding. Spare a thought for those of us who live in rural areas with an upload max of 448 kbps.
If I stream over my LAN to VLC the bitrate according to VLC is 648 kbps which is too fast for my connection.
Could anyone please confirm what the rate actually is?

Should be 500Kb/s
