Vu+ Solo 4K in North America (California)

Hi! I've been using DVB receivers for over ten years, and have multiple C and Ku band dishes.

I just received my Solo 4K today, but haven't figured out how to enter new satellites. I'd hoped to get it working on SES3 (103W) since I already have a working fixed Ku dish pointing there.

It already has the European satellites programmed in, but stops at 58W.

Can anyone help me enter satellites into the receiver, and while I'm doing that, editing the transponder lists?

Thanx!

Generate satellites.xml for your region here: http://satellites-xml.org and send it to your reciever replacing original. I use for it Dreambox Control Center E2 v2.9.6 but if you have Mac, you need iDreamX. Location of satellites.xml in reciever: etc/tuxbox.

Thanx, guys!

I'll try creating the XML file.

How do I access the operating system of the receiver so that I can copy the file to the right location?

Thanx again!!

You can use FTP client to connect to your box and replace XML file.
Reboot your box after replace to apply changes.

Hello.
I am located near Atlanta, Ga. The new Solo 4K will have limited use in the United States due to lack of a blindscan. This seems to have been an advertised feature that does not work.

Downloading a satellite .xml file may help a little bit, but it will not equal what can be found using blindscan, so you will end up entering the transponder information directly into the receiver using the remote control, or you may edit with a channel/transponder editor such as Dreamset. You may also use one of many free .xml editors to directly edit the satellite .xml file.

You may find that the audio, time, and some other things do not work correctly using the BlackHole image. Open BlackHole does not have these issues, and works better for our part of the world.

Congratulations on your new box! Let me know if there is anything I can help you with. EB

HI, Guys!

I appreciate the tips and help! I've never done FTP on a box before (that I know of...) I'll have to read up on it, and see what I have to do. I seem to remember having an FTP program that I used to download things off of the Internet many years ago. I'm hoping that what I learn here will also translate to monitoring my new solar panel system through FTPing the inverter.

I solved my network connection issues, and accessed the plugins. I even found blindscan plugin, which I ran, but didn't have time to see what came up.

I've been using a GeoSatPro micro HD receiver for the last few years. The operation of the uHD and the Solo 4K are considerably different!

Maybe I can find a way of converting the transponder list from the uHD to work with the Solo 4K!

I'm sure I'll be asking some newbie questions, but I'll try to research things myself before asking here!

Thanx!!!

I think most people use FileZilla for ftp.
The blindscan plugin does not currently work for the Solo4K.
The satellite file for the MicroHD and the Solo4K are not interchangeable or compatible. Some pay channel editors may allow you to change the MicroHD file to enigma2, but I have found these editors to be buggy.

Woo Hoo!!

I got the FTP to work. User name was "root" but the Password was "password" rather than the blank entry that some sites suggested for Vu+ solo products. I copied the UTF-8 version of the XML file to my box as advised, having saved the old one as satellite.xml.old, just to be safe! Now I have all the satellites around the world. I was then able to scan the transponders listed in the XML file for SES3.

I am not ready to deal with the DiSEqC setup for fear of messing it up (which happened a couple of years ago while fighting with an Azbox Premium HD box. When I have a day off of work, I'll try setting that up on one of my other motorized C-band dishes.

El Bandido is right about the blindscan... I thought it was working, but after doing a factory reset, to lose my manually input transponders, I saw that it actually didn't come up with anything. A bit of a disappointment. Perhaps the developers will update the plugin sometime soon?

Anyway, thanx for the help! I'll be asking more questions in the future, I'm sure. (like what's this "black hole" thing, anyway?)

Thanx again!!!

Hi, EB!

I used WSFTP which is the FTP program I used years and years ago. I'll be playing with the XML file and the file from the uHD, and see if I can at least use the information from one to enter manually into the other.

Thanx!

Manual entry will work. You should only need to b concerned with Frequency, polarization, and symbol rate. I would expect the 4K to auto tune the rest of the settings.

Also,
ATSC usb devices are available from Sundtek that work well for me. I use two or double ATSC usb devices in my Duo2.

Also testing TBS 5925 in the Duo2 if you happen to have that particular item.

I expect you will really enjoy your new receiver!

Hi EB!

Thanx again for your help! When I have some time I will try to set up the 4K on one of my less used c band dishes and get the diSEqC positions set up. Since each satellite in my system has the same number ( starting at 137W with #1) once I've set it up on that dish, I should be able to use it on my main dish.

I was pleased to see that I could attach a 5TB external USB 3,0 drive and have it recognized by the 4K!

Now,I just need some free time to play with it!! ;-)

Later!!

HI, everyone!

I had a little bit of time to play with my solo 4K and I have parts of it working, but some parts are still not working.

I've updated my software to the most recent Black Hole software (from a week or two ago).

I have used the 4K with both Ku only dishes and C/Ku dishes. I have even received some 4K programming from SES3 C band.

I had difficulty making the DiEqC 1.2 motor work, but I found that I could make the motor move in Satfinder mode. Thus, I am able to control my main C/Ku band dish motor and was able to run a "Service Scan" on a number of satelites, automatically. I suppose that the XML file I uploaded to it a couple of months ago must have survived the firmware update. However, it only found the Ku band transponders.

Now, what I can't seem to do is have both C and Ku bands selectable by one of its tuners. I've got a typical American setup, a 2.2 meter dish an orthomode feedhorn with C and Ku selected by 22Khz tones, and polarity selected by voltage (13V and 18V, I think). My Ku LNB local oscillator is 10750Mhz, and the C band LO is 5150MHz.

For example, I'm pointed at 103.0W, which has both C and Ku band programming I want.

From the menu:
I'm set up as LNB1
Priority (Auto)
LOF (user defined)
LOF/L (5150)
LOF/H (10750)
Threshold (10750)
Voltage Mode (Poliarization)
Tone Mode (Band)

I have no idea what the Threshold refers to.

I kind of wish that there was a document that identified what all these choices meant to this receiver. That, or a document of how to set it up with a standard American C/Ku dish!

Can someone tell me what my settings should be for my configuration?

Thanx!!!!

What does not work correctly? What are you missing on 103W?
The threshold is where the 22KHz tone is turned on. I would suggest trying 11700 for the threshold. Make sure that Tone Mode is set to Band.

Hi EB!

The problem I'm having is that the receiver isn't switching bands. My threshold is set to 10750, which is different from your setting. I'll try 11700 this weekend when I have some time to play with it again.

Thanx again for your help!!

Woo hoo!!!

We have band switching! 11700 was a good threshold number. The receiver scanned all the satellites and frequencies in my satellites.xml file . I now can see NHK on SES3 ku and PBS on V band SES3, not to mention the UHD channels!

Next question regards getting saved videos onto my windows pc. Vu+ doesn't recognize files on an NTFS disc, nor does my pc recognize the videos I recorded from the vu+.

Thanx!!!

Hi EB!
I was going over your first reply to my questions and I see you mentioned using a TBS 5925 with your Duo.

I have an external USB DVB tuner of that model number. Are you saying you can drive it from a Duo? That could be like an extra tuner module for the Vu+?

I'm very interested to hear what you are doing with it!

Thanx again!!!

Google "tbs 5925 enigma2". You will find a North American site in that search which will have more detailed information. I use the 5925 for blindscanning, 16APSK feeds, and as a extra tuner. You may use the tbs 5925 to do blindscans and build a satellites.xml file.

ATSC support was recently added, and Sundtek also has an ATSC solution for us. Google search "ATSC enigma2" for more information.
