which satellite for reference?

I'm not receiving some satellites and was wondering if I had done something wrong? moved to a new house and set up my dish using 0.8W as a reference point but I'm no longer getting hipasat?? I only have a house about 20 metres away that could possibly be obstructing but I wouldn't of thought that'd be a problem?

I have find this info for you.(Thanks to author from http://www.techwatch.co.uk/forums/5987-how-to-setup-a-motorised-dish-the-easy-way-with-usals.html)
and this one http://motorised-satellite-uk.com/installation-setup-tutorial/

Setting up the antenna that receives good satellites at orbit ends
is a very precise job.

==========================================================================================================

Welcome to Tech-Tronix Forums guides. We will explain an easy way to align a motorised satellite dish using the USALS setting on your satellite receiver. This method has been extensively tested by ourselves and is a very accurate method of installation.

Step 1. You will need to know your latitude and longitude before you start. A great place to fine this
information is Multimap (www.multimap.com) simply enter your post code, and the coordinates
and displayed below the map. For example if we enter NG12 3PB our coordinates will be:
Lat: 52:54:22N
Lon: 1:02:11W

You need to round up or down the coordinates to the nearest whole number. For example:
Lat 52.5N
Lon 1.0W

Step 2. Install the DisEqc motor and dish as instructed in the manual that came with your motor.
Make sure your mounting pole is perfectly vertical. Once you have done this and connected the motor to your satellite receiver, you need to enter the USALS menu. This will be explained in the receivers manual. Simply enter the the coordinates into the menu. Then select the THOR satellite at 1°West. The motor should move from it's default 0° to 1°West. Select a reliable channel such as BBC World.

Step 3. We presume that you are using a standard in-line meter in between your LNB and the DisEqc motor. Using the meter carefully align the dish to the Thor satellite. You should start to receive BBC World. Fine tune the dish to peak the signal as high as possible. Return to the receiver and select another satellite such as Hellasat at 39°East. Check the Alignment everything should be spot on. If not return to Thor and check the alignment again.

If you followed the instructions properly, you should be able to view a large number of satellites across the arc. Happy Viewing!

Please feel free to distribute this guide in any way. However you must not edit the text.

Just to add that negative Longitude readings = West, positive = East.
Your True South position is based on your Longitude position, which is why you have everything set at 0, when starting, then, if using USALS, you enter your Latitude, and Longitude, into your receiver then drive your motor to a suitable satellite, for alignment, preferably one near to your true South.
Once done you physically move your dish/motor, on the pole, until you get the strongest signal, from your selected satellite.
Once done you tighten eveything up, carefully, so that it doesn't move, then use your receiver to send it to your furthest, available, East satellite, usually 39E, then furthest, available, West satellite, usually 30W. Make a note of the signal quality readings, then send it back to the initial satellite, you used for alignment, to make fine adjustment, to get it tracking the satellite arc correctly.

im picking up most satellites that I usually do just not hipasat, im resricted 31.5 on the east as my house faces SW but the only thing that could be in the way is the house but that shouldn't be obstructing the signal unless hipasat is pretty low on the horizon?? thanks for the help by the way!

Try dishpointer.com, put in your postcode, select 30W, from the drop down satellite list, then zoom in on the map, moving the green icon, to where you have your dish sited.
Next tick the obstacle checker box and move the red icon to ant possible obstuctions, this will show how high the obstruction has to be to intefere with your signal.
If there are no obvious obstructions try using the motor positioner option to move your dish, slightly East/West, until you get a signal.
Also check with lyngsat.com for an active transponder, on 30W.

just had a quick look and I get on the west side 0.8W YES, 4.0W NO, 5.0W YES, 7.0W NO, 11W YES, 12.5W YES, 15W NO, 18W NO, 24.5W NO, 27.5W NO, 30W NO, 45W NO. don't think my dis is out of alignment if im picking up some satellites on the west??

The images, from dishpointer, can be a few years old.
There appear to be a lot of trees, in your area, and some of them look quite big, are there any between your dish and where you have the red icon sited?

Can you please post the frequencies, and signal quality readings, of the channels you are getting, along with the satellite.

The dish is probably not aligned correctly. For your area, the dish should be at its highest point at .8W, and the dish elevation will slowly decrease as you move away from .8W.
As a test, move to the satellites that have a signal, then slightly push and pull on the dish at the top, bottom, and on each side. The signal should decrease whenever the dish is moved. If the signal increases during this test, then the dish is not properly aligned.

Another test would be to manually move the motor and try to get a signal at 15 or 18 West. For example, if you get a signal for 18 West, but your dish is at 16.5 or 17 West, the dish elevation is set too low. If you get a signal for 18 West but your dish is at 19 or 19.5 West, then the dish elevation is set too high. Use the strongest transponders to do these tests.

I think it is clear that
or the antenna is not well tuned
or antenna support tube is not vertical.

I do not believe that at such a large distance from the antenna trees prevent reception all of these satellites if any.
Are you sure you have well-read manual of your rotor.

You need to check reception from eastern satellites.
If there is a similar result then it is certain that the central satellite is out of adjustment.
Either you made a mistake in calculating the elevation of the rotor and antenna.

If the reception from eastern satellites is good especially the end satellites
Then mount/ support tube is not vertically installed.

I am limited to the east to test as my house faces SW (dish hits wall) had to opt for a smaller dish from the 1.2m one I used at my old house so I am now using a 80cm dish, I will test properl at the weekend but will give you the signal readings for the satellites that I am receiving at the moment if that will help?

Can you give us information:

Which box you have
Which rotor
Which antenne >>Size
====
How many degrees you have set your antenna
How many degrees you have set your rotor
How long is the cable (approximately)

???

Matrix10

elevation on motor is 55 degrees
elevation on dish is 28 degrees (approx) I think?

Ok
I think I have good Manual for your rotor

Motor 55 degrees

3. Setting Declination Angle.(B)
• Find the Declination Angle on the attached
ANGLE TABLE.
• Set the Declination Angle by the scale on the antenna dish. The reading on the antenna scaleshould be:
35°-DECLINATION ANGLE

For your Motor and location

ElevationAngle 55
DeclinationAngle 5,6
DishBracket Angle 29,5
============================================================

So motor on 55
Antenna on 29,5
========================
Set the antenna to 0 position on the rotor
Adjust Elevations
Motor ElevationAngle 55
DishBracket Angle 29,5

With the receiver move the antenna to your 0 satellite ( 0,8 W ?)
Set manually position of the rotor (east/west) for maximum signal.
Make fine-tuning correction in elevation of your antenna (not motor) for maximum signal.
Adjust the position of the LNB for the maximum signal , one centimeter can make noticeable difference in signal strength.
( up and down towards the center of the antenna .Leave the LNB angle 0 degree )

TEST

If not OK

Do not forget one degree is very important

you have to try one or two degrees lower Angle and one or two degree higher Angle on your rotor.
Adjust the antenna Angle every time on the maximum signal
on your zero-satellite 0.8 W ?
Adjust the position of the LNB for the maximum signal , one centimeter can make noticeable difference in signal strength.
( up and down towards the center of the antenna .Leave the LNB angle 0 degree )

Look strength to the east and west.
At the end satellites that you can recive .
Write the names of channels / satellites and the signal strength.

Repeat procedure

Compare the result on the same satellites and channels.
with two different angles on the motor and antenna.

Bring conclusion

Re-adjust the antenna to the maximum and test .
