Video files are not like word, excel or pdf files where the extension tells you everything about the file itself. Speaking of "mp4" oar "avi" or the lot does not mean anything. For the video files what matters is the encoding and here we can have many many codecs.
Try to re-encode your files by Handbrake choosing, for example, h264 and see what happens.
