I've done all the tests suggested around a year ago ie the box, the rear, the origin of the mac address; my brand new machine looks and feels like the real deal (especially when placed side by side with my older one).

I cannot check inside as it would break the warranty.

But the second I picked up the remote control I noticed a difference. This also looks exactly the same but the back doesn't have the smooth, glossy feel of my first one bought two years ago.

My question therefore is has the remote control changed or is this a clone giveaway?

And is there anything else I can do to check authenticity?

Usually a customer has the right to open the box case to install a hard disk without losing the warranty.

A hard disk was installed by the supplier. By all accounts the inside of the clones are now very like the genuines, aren't they?

Why don´t you post where you have bought your Solo2 STB, check Retailers list on our forum ... check too, if in the entire posts, have anyone buyed on the same shop dealer, check the price you have payed for it! Check too on your manual if there are any information to how to program your remote control!

The retailer is not mentioned here.

Price suggests genuine (but what's to stop a dealer buying clones and selling them as originals)?

The problem with the remote has nothing to do with programming. It is the material it is made from and the feel of it.

Ask Vuplus ... send him the serial number to check!

On solo, not solo2, there are products that has seal to firmware upgrading for a site mentioned on it, not vuplus official website!

I´m from Portugal, and as i know, there are only two official retailers!

How would I go about that (thank you for your replies)?

Go to vuplus.com and send an e-mail posting the name of the supplier and entire serial number of your STB ... ask them to verify the item ... wait for the answer ... Ask too, your seller if him, is retailer or distributor ( they are not equal )!

Don´t worry, ask for it! ... If you haven´t buyed an original STB ... you are helping others, to not do that ... and of course ... you can ask them for a refund!

Sometimes is difficult, but it works too...
