Problems with Vu+ Uno

Vu+ Newbie
Hi everyone,

I've just bought a new Vu+ Uno and it works fine with my motorised dish, but I'm having real problems with it.

I've tried upgrading the FPGA and it seems to go ok, but after the upgrade, system info still says it is on version 0. (Main Menu>Information>About). Also, the image is: Experimental 2011-06-16

I've tried upgrading to BlackHole 1.7.2 via various methods but each time it seems to fails.

I tried putting BH 1..7.2 on a Sandisk USB stick but it doesn't seem to pick up the files. (I tried various folders, all to no avail).

I also tried putting it on a 2.5 drive, after which I realised it was formatted to NTFS so I re-formatted it to ExFAT, but still no go.

I've tried mounting network shares (I'm not an expert on linux, but followed the instructions here:
Code:
http://www.world-of-satellite.com/showthread.php?15974-How-To-Setting-up-Windows-Network-Share&p=116401#post116401
) but thjat doesn't seem to work. Moreover, every time I make a change, it takes 9-12 minutes to effect.

help, please?

Dominic

Regarding your problems:
1) FPGA version is not currently reporting to image: we have reported this issue to Vu+ Dev Team
2) to flash you MUST USE A FAT32 formatted stick and put the vuplus/ folder obtained to image unzip process (from zip file of course) and flash your box
3) HDDs: NTFS and/or ExFAT are not natively supported by LINUX boxes: format your disk via image directly and mount it

Ok, do you think I actually have updated but it just reports the wrong version?

2) to flash you MUST USE A FAT32 formatted stick and put the vuplus/ folder obtained to image unzip process (from zip file of course) and flash your box
I'm not quite clear on this. Do you mean the file must be unzipped exactly as is to the USB stick i.e.

\BlackHole-1.7.2-vuuno_usb\vuplus\uno\
I tried every combination of folders, all to no avail. The closest I get is that it loads the colour splash screen, then changes to a b+w version with the loading indicator bottom right of screen, and never gets beyond that even after 1/2 hour.

I can get it out of that state by selecting a new channel, but then it's back to the original image.

3) ... format your disk via image directly and mount it

If you mean format it on the Vu+ box, I've tried that and it fails. I get the following message.

Unable to initialise harddisk.
Error: Creating partition failed

On your USB FAT32 stick for flash you MUST have the folder "vuplus" and their childs.
About FPGA: make update again doesen't break your box ;) re-run the upgrade FPGA process
About HDD: format the disk on Windows first and then retry to format it with box.

I don't know what CA is used by your TV ISP. The Vu+ box comes with Conax CA inside (natively) except for Ultimo who has XCrypt inside.
I haven't a Conax subscription to make tests in this side :(

I heven't made changes to the box, except for the FPGA upgrade. I use the native card slot.
Some free british channels like BBC and SKY news do show but not the ones that i pay for;(

Ok,

Just to get back on track here, today I went out and bought a new 4Gb fat32 pendrive (Kingston Data Traveller G3) installed the upgrade on that and still no luck.

Following that, I did a factory re-set (which by the way, didn't delete my plugins) and started from scratch. First upgrading the FGPA. This time it went a little different. I upgraded it form the download folder and after about 15-20 mins it finally said it was finished - so far the same. The difference is that in the past it would delete the TS_PRO.dat file from the tmp folder after completing, this time it was still there.

Following that, I tried upgrading to BH 1.7.2 via the new pendrive from folder vuplus/ by installing it in the front usb port and cycling power.

Still no luck.

By the way, I managed to format the 2.5 HD to Fat 32 with Ridgecrop Consultants FAT32 Formatter, although I haven't had a chance to try it in the RX yet.

@ bigcat

You must create in your USB stick a folder named vuplus AND INSIDE this folder vuplus you must create a folder named uno.

In this folder uno you put the 4 files of the image.

Is it the way you did proceed ?

@niglou thanks for your reply.

Yes I did, exactly as you say vuplus/uno/files. That's how it comes from the zip. I also tried other combinations.

This afternoon, just for fun, I also tried different usb ports - just in case. Still no joy.

I can see the Vu+ folder structure via Windows Explorer. Is there somewhere else I can try installing the files to be picked up on boot?

BTW: I seem to remember reading somewhere about putting something in lib/modules. I don't have a lib/modules. Could this be part of the problem?

My friend, the structure of folder for flash process is very simple.
Unzip the image file and put the vuplus folder obtained into a FAT32 usb formatted stick.
Put the stick into the box, turn ON it and push the "-" button when requested by box via it's display.

I have never been prompted to press the "-" button. It simply starts with the original colour splash which then becomes Black and White, after which I see "Loading..." in the bottom right corner, and that's where the story ends.

I've been reading around and it seems there are Vu+ clones. Perhaps I've been sold one of these. Is there any way to find out?

I think you should try with other usb sticks first.... your usb stick has some leds on it? they turn on when the box starts (during "Starting...")?

bigcat

Vu+ Newbie
You haven't answered about leds on your pendrive... the box try to find the usb stick? the leds should blink several times
Yes with the new drive the led blinks when it's being accessed. with the other one, it just comes on (not blinking) when being accessed. I do see them being accessed after re-boot, so the Vu+ does try and read them, then stops and boots as per my description above.

Not sure about the HD as the red led is always on with power.

You should use the new usb stick :) seems good.
Remember to disconnect your HDD.
Sorry if these hints sound banal and stupid :(

Dear Friend
The Press "-" is displayed on the VU+ Uno Receiver, NOT the TV Screen.
Before Updating new image,
Turn off VU+ from Rear Switch
Remove All USB Devices
In Front VU+ UNO USB Port ONLY Insert USB Stick (Fat32) with
unzipped image structure.(In USB-STICK Root Place vuplus folder)
Turn On Rear Switch
Wait to See " Press - " ON VU+ UNO Receiver Display and
Press "-" on VU+ UNO Receiver.
Wait to See The "Finished" message on VU+ UNO Receiver Display.
Turn Off Rear Switch.
Remove Front USB Stick.
Turn ON Rear Switch.

And As Angelofsky1980 says.
"Sorry if these hints sound banal and stupid "

Good Luck

Our friend has reported on his next post the correct led blinking when the usb stick is inserted ;)
