DUO2 Weak tuners?

Jan Suhr

Vu+ Newbie
I have for a while suspected that the VU+ tuners have a weak reception. I am comparing with my 10 year old Topfield TF4000 box.

When receiving from Astra 28.2 I have on the Topfield Signal strenght at 83% and signal quality at 65%, this is in cloudy and raining conditions. On my Duo2 I have SNR a 0%, this is on the same channel, BBC Ni.

In general the VU+ (both my Solo2 and Duo2) seems to be very sensitive to bad weather. The footprint for Astra for the English channels are weak. I have a 120cm dish with a good LNB head. With the Topfield I only had problems when it was really bad weather, now the signal is gone with a simple drissle. So far I have been using VU+ this summer with mostly good weather, the upcoming fall doesn't look promising for my reception...

I have seen some posts about this on the web. Is there something that can be done???
Drivers?
Better tuners?

I do not have to compare Topfield
I can not agree when it comes to enigma2 receivers
because my comparisons with more than eight HD E2 receivers
from different manufacturers
based on enigma 2 do not show significant differences.

Indicating the strength may be different but that's another story.
(Speaking of signals on my solo2 many Channels go to 100% SNR on Astra Sats
What is the maximum with antenna of 85cm.So we have over 55% signal reserves
With antenna 68 cm signal is abt 90 to 95 % on astra sats from nw Europe)

No significant differences in the reception of weak signals on all E2 HD receivers.
But it is more or less understandable
because satellite receiver is not crucial in the reception of weak signals
but LNB and antenna.
Why is it so with you for me is a mystery.
Is this Topfield set HD or SD only ?
It is possible that another LNB may give better results.

To add

Now I tested with the DUO2 BBC NI
antenna currently 68 cm half signal passes through the leaves of trees
No blocking.

Signal is locked even when I move dish to the lowest level of 37%
When there are no leaves on the trees signal is more than 90%.
How will then rain block the signal ?

Thanks for your reply.

My main interest is in the English channels from BBC, ITV and Channel 4, when the skies are clear I have SNR between 40-50%, other Astra channels have better signal at 80-90%
The old Topfield is SD only, HD wasn't around when I bought it :) I am located in Sweden, 100 km south of Stockholm. We have a footprint for Astra that is kind of weak for the Brittish channels but with big enough dish it is possible to get good reception.

So for example the BBC 2 episode tonight with the Hairy Bikers just gave me a blank screen with the DUO2 and perfect reception on my 10 year old Topfield, both set to BBC Ni, so there is a clear difference.

I have a very good LNB, Inverto Pro Twin, the dish is a 120 cm from Visiosat so the equipment shouldn't be any problem and that can be confirmed with the reception on the Topfield.

I was looking through the settings for the tuner, and in advanced mode there is one setting for the LNB Voltage, now it is at AUTO, is there something to play with there. Maybe I can tweak the settings there to optimize the reception? BTW the user manual from VU+ doesn't cover much on tuner settings.

I get around +2% compare to my old DM8000...
my box has 2x single s2 tuners :) (special edition LOL )

I presumed that it was SD receiver.
In fact they have a narrow filters and that's the difference compared to HD
receiver.Which means less noise
which allows better detection of digital signals.

But I still think that the difference is too big
Have you tried it with Inverto Black Ultra LNB .
I have very good results.

Yes it is the one I have, the full name is:
Inverto High Gain Low Noise Black Ultra Pro Twin

It looks like thisIMG_1463.jpg

And the dish looks like this, it has 100% free view to the sky and to Astra 28.2:

The cables are about 35 meters to the box, one of them has an amplifier that increased the signal with about 4-5%. With regard to the Duo2 both cables give about the same signal strength.

Your installation Look good,

I do not think we can compare the SD receivers with HD receivers
due to the different design and a bandwidth
Resulting in a higher level of noise .
Most of new E2 commercial receivers uses similar components without some important differences between them.

Are you saying that because that the box can receive HD channels the reception on SD channels is a bit lower?

Today when the weather is better I'm at 55% ±1%.

I guess I'll have to keep my old Topfield as a backup when the weather goes bad. Or buy a larger dish...

Hi
I'm from Iran
I also have a problem with Mr. Jan Suhr.
I've bought a dou2 two Tuner.
I have a very good dish and lnb settings are very minute.
The weather was great and the entire state of fluctuation signal was Czech.
Even on equal terms with the other machines I've Czech.
Is there any way I could tuner is weak it seems that I can solve this problem because I have problems getting some channels.

Super sensitive tuners
Focal point position is extremely important

My LNB was 2mm too fare from the dish
My old setup was working ok, but when changing to Vu+, i had no signal 0%, so i had to ajust the focal point.
Moving the LNB 2mm closer to the dish, resulting in signal 99%

Best regards

What type of lnb and the dish you're using?
I've used every kind of configuration that the Czech was to no avail.
If a low of climate change on some other frequency Aslan I have no signal but the receiver no longer have this problem.
Please help

What type of lnb and the dish you're using?

Megasat Diavolo Monoblock Quad LNB (0.1 dB)
Triax TDS78S 78 cm

Focal point
Triax TDS78S = X - 4,5 cm

Lnb positioning:
X - (4,5 + 0,5) = X - 5,0 cm
Triax_TDS78S_FocalPoint.png

The detail picture above shows that the
position of the focal point (the knot connecting
top and bottom string) is about 4.5 cm directly
in front of the LNB holder.
The precise position of the phase center varies depending on the type of feed horn, but is
located inside the horn, often about 5 mm behind the front.

Best Regards

I have more or less been seeing the same issue as you have Jan. I experience digital noise when watching SD channels (momentary horisontal lines/blocks) and sometimes even sound pitches, which is extremely disturbing. HD channels are as crisp as chips and I never see any digital noise on any of them. The thing is that when I connect the same cables to the built in Samsung TV tuner (HD), all is well, both SD and HD channels. Signal is at 80-99%... What can be done in order to solve this? Is there any external signal filter that I can try? This issue is seriously making me consider switching to another box manufacturer.

I have to agree also with @jan and @octolnb, the duo2 tuner is not as good with weak signals as other sat boxes. As much as i love VU products, i have to be fair and addmit that compared with BCM4505 tuner from DMM, on the same dish(toroidal 90),lnb Invert Black Ultra(twin) and cable, and same sat position-28,2e(even on a longer cable for BCM tuner), the signal is locked and can be seen without any problems at 25% quality(for HD), as opposed to duo2 tuner, who locks signal on 29-30%(for HD). So, in the same weather condition, i can watch some channels only in one room(with DM7020 HD), and not in the living room with Duo2. Sad, but true...
Maybe if Vu+ listens to us they'll improve the tuners in the future...
