Duo2 Boot up Issue

Vu+ Newbie
Hi All,

I have now run the Duo2 via the serial cable an have an output via putty. There are two files, one is when I switch it on via the rocker switch. It ended saying it would reboot in 180 seconds. So I have also captured what happens when it reboots.

Please have look, and hopefully someone will be able to explain it to me.

Many Thanks

I thought we had a 2 year guarantee, in the UK, I seem to remember reading about it somewhere.
You might also want to check with the vuplus official site, see if you can contact them, or at least see if this is a known problem.

Hi,
Mick12334, is there a difference between warranty and guarantee? This is the official statement from World of Satellite site: Terms and Conditions:
12* MONTHS HARDWARE GUARANTEE

In addition to all benefits conferred on the buyer by statute SDF TRADING LTD guarantees all goods offered for a period of 12 months from the date of purchase, provided that: (a) it is established to the reasonable satisfaction of SDF TRADING LTD that some part of the hardware used in the manufacture was defective, and the goods have been returned to seller, and (b) the goods have not been subject to misuse, damage or abuse of any kind.

Warranty support is provided by SDF TRADING LTD to the original purchaser of the goods only. We do not provide a transferable warranty to a third party except in exceptional circumstances and consideration to grant such permission will only be considered by written request.

*GOLDEN INTERSTAR, MIRACLEBOX, WETEK, XTREND HAVE 24 MONTH HARDARE WARRANTY, ALL Vu+ MODELS PURCHASED FROM 01/01/2015 HAVE 24 MONTH HARDWARE WARRANTY.

Hi,

Saw this in the world of satellite forum:
Code:
http://www.world-of-satellite.com/forumdisplay.php?408-VU-Duo2-Talk it says

found thus also for the duo :

RE: Fix bootloaderhi mate, I had the same problem and sent box back to supplier and they came up with this fix. Switch the box off, on the rear side.
choose in putty for serial connect, speed must be set to 115200 and choose you`re comport.
Put the box on, when you`re connection is oke, you wil see some text scrolling over the putty screen.
Now use the ctrl + c key to stop the booting.
copy the following line in the screen:

boot -z -elf flash0.kernel: 'rootfstype=jffs2 root=/dev/mtdblock0 rw mem=0x8000000 bcmrac=3`

The box now reboot from the flash, so watch you`re box.
Then open telnet with dcc and put in the following line.

flash_eraseall /dev/mtd5

and after that the following line

reboot -f

Then you`re box is running again.

It may work for you, nothing beats a try.

What do you think about this as a possible fix.

Into my Duo2 there is no device mtd5 ... and flash_eraseall has been replaced by another command (flash_erase) so I've some doubts about this fix.

Hi.
Thanks for the URL for the vuplus official site. There are no telephone numbers (or am I missing where they are?). Do I make a sales enquiry or bug report. These are both under support tab.

Usually for your kind of requests, your reseller (who sell you the box) should be the first attempt to get support; official distributor for your country can be the easiest and fast solution if the reseller ignore you and the last change is to ask Vu+.

There is another way but it's the very last attempt and is out of my skills: substitute flash chip. It's not impossible but it's not easy to do in first person and can be evaluated only if all previous try fails for any kind of reasons.

Hi All,

Firstly, Thanks for all your support.

My next steps are as follows: I have sent the information (RS232) to WoS. I am asking them if they can do anything for me as I have only had the unit for 18 months. Lets see what the response is.

Hi All,

Here is some interesting information regarding nand chips. Seems like these little beauties are known to have bad blocks from day 1.

Code:
http://www.stlinux.com/howto/NAND/BadBlocks
"It is in the nature of NAND Flash that a small proportion of the blocks in the device are defective and therefore unusable from the day of manufacture (typically up to 1% is deemed acceptable by the manufacturer). Manufacturers perform thorough testing to identify any potentially bad blocks. When they have been identified, bad blocks are marked with a special marker in the OOB area of the block. This is the Manufacturer's Bad Block Marker (MBBM)"

I do not see many problems like yours with the Duo2 and cannot help but wonder if your receiver was exposed to a voltage spike of some type?

I know this is an old thread but My Duo2 did the same thing just now before Christmas.

A very big well known UK satellite dealer was no help and totally unsympathetic even though I was only just out of guarantee.

Googling around for a solution I came across this forum post and then when I searched for "duo2 faulty" on Google.Com found a London guy who actually fixed mine - this Duo2 no boot fault IS actually fixable without always having to change the memory chips.

When I first got my Duo2 I was experimenting with different images and one of the images got me to run a software tool of some kind that reported that some "blocks" of my Duo2's memory was bad (even though it was less than a month old at the time).

So my Duo2 is now back from the dead and working beautifully but it did not need replacement memory chips just new capacitors - cannot now remember which image it was (ViX?) or the name of the software tool - if anybody happens to know which Enigma2 software tool can readout how many bad blocks you have please post it up here.
